Traffic Increase

Well, we have seen a noticable traffic increase to the site lately. Often there are close to 100 people online between noon and 2:00PM. Guess some people are not only surfing at lunch, but also after lunch :)

Thank you to everyone for your support, advice and suggestions!

Looking for dance partners?

I have had a few of our members ask for a feature that could help them find a dance partner. Is this something that people would want?

What information would people be willing to provide if such a feature were added to this site? As this information would have to be publicly visible, what information would people be willing to share in their request for a dance partner?

Perhaps their sex, the sex of the partner they are searching for, their age, what dance styles they are interested in finding a partner for, their experience level? Is there anything else that comes to mind?

Would people feel uncomfortable if this request was associated to their current userid? (This would allow people to respond by private messages - without sharing email addresses)

Feel free to comment.

Mid-summer newsletter sent out

We have issued our mid-summer newsletter for site-members. If you already have the option enabled in 'My account' you should get the newsletter within the next day or so by email. You can also read the newseletter by using the newsletter link from the menu on the front page of the site.

We also have another newsletter oriented specifically to dance organization contacts on the site. If you run a dance-related organization you may also want to subscribe to that newsletter as well.

The Editors

We have added Messaging, Member Pictures, and Member Blogs

MEMBER PICTURES

You can now add your picture to your login account, if you want. Go to 'My account', edit it and you can upload your picture there. If you run a dance organization, you may want to upload your logo instead.

PRIVATE MESSAGING

We have also added private messaging. You can now send messages to other members and organizations on this site. All you need to know is their id. And you can message back and forth without revealing your real email address. Not only that; if you send a message and the person is not online, we'll automatically email them to let them know that there is a message waiting for them here! To manage all your messages and options, there is a new item in your menu: 'My messages'.

Listings Can Now Contain Images

You can now add an image to any content listing you add to the site. The image will then be shown on the page itself, as well as in any tables on the site.

We also support site sponsorship which gives the sponsor special privileges. For more information on sponsorship, see 'Become a Sponsor' in the menu on the left.

Kingston, Toronto and Montreal now running

www.Dance-Kingston.com Launched!
www.Dance-Toronto.com Launched!
www.Dance-Montreal.com Launched!

These sites are now running. But because there is little or no listings yet for these new sites, Ottawa items will likely appear on the top of their lists for a while. We will be adding listings shortly for these new sites, and visitors are welcome to add their own listings now. They will be fine-tuned over the next few weeks.

Note that you can add listings while logged in to any of our sites, and it will appear on all of them automatically!

Improved Distance to Venue Calculations

We have changed the site to now provide distances to venues for anyone who views the site, whether they are logged in or not.

If you are logged in and have specified your Location (in My account), it will give you the distance from your own exact location, but if you are not logged in, or you have not specified your Location in 'My account', then it gives you the distance from the centre of town.

Simplified

We have removed the 'Dance Venues' menu. This will make it alot easier to create events, since the venue can now be specified explicitly in every event, no matter who is running the event, or where its run.

OSDS Tenth Anniversary

Pauline and I attended the Ottawa Swing Dance Society 10th Anniversary Dance. Big Band Caravane was terrific. Unfortunately it was their last public event. And the venue was perfect. Swing Dynamite and Dance with Alana tought some lessons and almost everyone joined in. I hope everyone will now remember the ShimSham and Electric Slide!

Well done, OSDS!
