There are literally thouands of different dance styles, and many ways to categorize them, depending on your point of view. To make things more confusing, some very different dance styles have the same name, the name being 'borrowed' from another style. To help classify dance styles, the following sections may be of some help.

Social Dance refers to the group of dance styles originally intended for socializing, such as Salsa, Swing and Line Dancing, Ballroom and Freestyle.

Performance Dance (or Concert Dance) refers to the group of dance styles originally intended to be performed for an audience, such as Ballet, HipHop and Belly Dancing.

Ecstatic Dance, though danced in a social setting, refers to a personalized dance form, a trance or meditation process.

But there is much overlapping in these definitions, since any dance form can potentially be danced as a performance or in a competition.
